2011 Boxing Day

OK, I can hear some of you saying it . . . . that was last year ! I know, I was going to post this before New Year and then forgot, but its here now.

I spent a couple of hours on Boxing Day down at the Chequers PH in Loose, South of Maidstone. I have been coming here on and off for many years on Boxing Day to watch the Morris Dancers but it’s been a few years since the last time. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a really good turn out. They were three sides dancing on Boxing Day, the hosts Boughton Morris who invited Loose Women and Cinque Port Morris Men sides along for the fun as well.

The Loose Women are always a joy to watch and very colourful along with it . . . .

Cinque Port Morris Men had a good outing. If you watch the video below then ‘m sure you’ll be able to find the other couple of clips that I’ve uploaded from the day. Right at the end, Boughton Morris got a lot of the innocent bystanders to join in which was quite fun to see them all having a go for themselves.

Ok – its got almost to the end of Jan and I haven’t posted on the blog yet for 2012! I was going to do this every week – bad start. I’ve added a new page to the blog to start making a note of where other people use my photos, either online or in the press. DJ Nev @ Chilston Park Hotel

DJ Nev of Mikasa Events infamy played his last wedding of the year at Chilston Park Hotel on Wed 21st December. Nev had asked for some more photos of him DJ’ing at a wedding to put on his new website (go check it out – it looks pretty cool.) The wedding was for an old friend of Nev’s and was therefore more than happy for him to bring along a photographer for the evening.

Nev does like to get involved in his ‘work’ and clearly enjoys what he does (thankfully for him – he doesn’t do Karaoke – I’m sure he wouldn’t have quite the same demand! )

It was a wedding so it seems silly not to include a couple of photos of the bride and the dancing . . . .

Nev’s lights were also really effective on the low ceiling of the Orangery.

This was also my last job of the year so thanks to everyone that I’ve worked with this year and Merry Christmas to you all.

Brook Family Portraits

Last weekend I had a really great afternoon session with the Brook family. We found the necessary space and set up the portable studio.

The young’un behaved superbly and was a star performer!

Mum and Dad did OK as well but lets be honest, who wants to see pictures of them when there is a cute toddler around?

We all had a fun time and I think there was a spark of a young photographer in the making as well. We had to keep stopping him coming back for a sneek of the photos on the back of the camera.

Well you don’t really do you, so you end up having a presence on them all !! (well the main ones at least).

Graham’s 30th

Last weekend my friend turned 30! It wasn’t really a Shooterz job but I did take my camera so sharing some with you here anyway . .

It was a great night meeting friends and a classic collaboration of Mikasa Events DJ Nev and lighting by Shock Solutions.

The party was held at the Kent Scouts Barn and Shock Solutions did a neat job of lighting this unusual venue.

Im dabbling with a little bit of video on my camera as well, it might come in handy on a real job one day, you get a feel for the atmosphere on the night . . .

Scotney Castle

It’s been a while since a post and I realised that I hadn’t shared my trip to Scotney Castle (National Trust) with you. It’s an idyllic venue with some great picturesque scenes to be had.

I was all by myself so had plenty of time to wait for people to clear the scenes and played with some HDR photos.

For those not in the know, HDR stands for ‘High Dynamic Range’ and is a process where you combine multiple photos into a single image. The idea is that you can show detail in the brightest areas of the image as well as detail in the darkest areas at the same time!

Compare this photo above which is HDR with the same shot shown below which is a single photo . . . Look at the sky for the give away . . .

You can see that I was REALLY lucky with the day, the moat was absolutely calm and the reflections were the best. You will also see that the HDR images have an almost painting like quality about them (some more than others). This is a choice I make when combining the photos together – I quite like it - do you ? You can see the effect a little more in the last photo below:

Electric Forest 2011

I went to the ‘Electric Forest’ display in Bedgebury Pinetum this October half term week to see what they had done with the forest. They lit up the forest in a wonderful display of colours and played sounds around the laid out trail.

I had expected that they would light up the lake and the Pinetum part of the forest. Instead they had catered more to the families and children by lighting up smaller tracks through the forest leading to and around some of the children’s play equipment which had also been illuminated.

They had a stop part way around the trail for refreshments where people could take a breather. This area was also lit up and had a really nice backdrop of illuminated trees.

There were lots of families and children on the trail enjoying the sights and playing with their torches in the dark having a good time.

One of the nicest parts of the trail was towards the end where a number of glitter balls had been hung up with spotlights on them. The whole area was bathed in soft light and the autumn leaves on the ground were lit up really nicely by the spinning glitter balls. With chilled music in the background it was my favourite scene.

There was one water lit scene at the start of the trail which was more like what I had been expecting of the evening.

Click on the pictures to see larger versions. These have been some of my favourites shots from the evening – there are others but I think I’ve given a broad idea of what the evening was like. They recommended an hour to go around the trail but it took me and my friend Jim 2 1/2 hours to go round with our cameras. Good job they didn’t limit the amount of time that you could spend on the trail.

It was a bit pricey at £16 per adult and £10 per concession but I am glad that we made the trip. It was a fine experience and maybe we should have taken some children with us.

Alys @ Sheffield Park

Alys is a good friend of mine and it so happened that we both had a day off work on the same day. I was going to Sheffield Park for some autumnal photos and Alys wanted a new Facebook profile picture. We joined the two together and got some great photos on a bright sunny October day.

These were some of my favourites from the day – I hope you like them. I never did get many of the autumnal colours but to be fair they weren’t at their best yet. I will add more photos from the day to the website or Facebook when they are all sorted.

ITV Rugby World Cup 2011

England may not have made their Rugby World Cup 2011 campaign go the distance, but before the ITV coverage moved out to New Zealand, I got an opportunity to go and photograph the set in the London studios. You’ll probably recognise this view . . . .

However, you probably wont have seen this view from round the back . . .

That big backdrop is actually created by a media server pushing out 11 HD video clips to 4 (circled) x 15,000 lumens Christie projectors. They have their images blended to create the illusion of a single seamless image. The man behind this technical wizardry is the owner of Shock Solutions, Andy Hook. Here he is playing with his new lighting control desk . . . .

He can do all sorts of things with that setup. Here’s an alternative view that I know you wont have seen before . . . .

The Aylesford X Factor

I’m going to call this the first of my X Factor series. That’s because instead of sitting and watching said TV programme (enough advertising!), I’m trying to get out with the camera instead. The weather seems to be against me this week but last week I did get out to Aylesford, a local village with an old stone bridge.

It’s a cracking old English type scene and it turns out that recently they added under-arch lighting to the Aylesford Bridge. I’ve lived in this area all my life and never thought to get a decent image of the bridge before and now the night time scene has been changed forever.

Whilst there I got the bridge from a couple of different angles . . . .

I realise now of course that it might have been nicer with the tide in so live and learn to check the tide tables before I go out next time. My favourite shot from the night I have saved until last and still think it looks OK with the tide out. Some of these shots, including the last one were HDR shots merging 3 exposures together.

2011 Kent Show

I was working at the Kent Show last weekend and took a few photos during the weekend. What was the highlight of the weekend I hear you ask . . . . well, unfortunately it was the weather ! On the Friday it was hot and sunny, see what a good time the morris dancers had:

Oh dear! I haven’t seen so much rain in many many years. I bumped into some great people over the weekend some old faces and some new . . .

This bunch of likely looking lads were the team from Excell looking after the power on the site. A good bunch of guys who worked tirelessly to keep the site running . . even dealt with the fallout of the lightning which tripped power to some areas of the site.

I took in the view at the KCC stand and saw the impressive LED video wall installed by my friends at Shock Solutions. 6m x 3m of high-res LED was pretty impressive.

Pat Marsh was doing a stirling job in the rain enticing people into the KCC marquee.

KCC also had an amazing entertainer on hand who I only know as Stuart so cant provide a link unfortunately. I have seen Stuart in his many guises over the years and he is brilliant !! He has several costumes but the most popular has to be the man in the cage.

The weather did put a bit of a damper on the weekend and must have affected the number of visitors to the show. Lets hope the weather stays onside next year and makes all the effort that little bit more worthwhile for everyone involved.

Brighton Hen Doo

A friend of mine from work was going on a hen doo to Brighton and thought it would be a great idea to ask me to go and get some nice photos of all the ladies together to supplement the usual drunken, blurred photos that we are all used to seeing.

So . . . it was a lovely day last Saturday and the beach at Brighton was rammed !! All my ideas for girls running up and down the beach were out of the window. Here’s what we did manage to get . . . . .

We progressed from whole group photos to some smaller groups of friends etc and I ended by hanging back a bit whilst they all chilled on the beach and got some individual portraits. It was a lovely afternoon and all worked out pretty well in the end.

Here’s the bride to be enjoying her weekend. Best of luck for her big day. Call me if your photographer goes sick on the day :-)

Andrea and Nick’s Wedding

I shot the photos for a great wedding the other week at a stunning venue for a really lovely couple. The wedding took place at Sundridge Park Manor, Bromley.

The weather looked like it really wasn’t going to work with us! The forecast was for showers and they seemed to be getting worse instead of better as the day progressed. As the groom arrived in the Aston Martin DBS it was still raining.

This venue has so many great backdrops for photo’s, we were spoilt for choice. We had a few photo’s with the boys before the ceremony around the place . . . and it stopped raining!

How come I’ve got this far into the post without mentioning the bride . . . . ? She looked amazing of course and I love this photo of her wedding dress and the dress of her little daughter.

It turned out that the weather gods were looking down on us after all. It seemed to stop raining every time that we wanted to venture outside to take photo’s. We were so lucky.

Later in the evening we headed back inside and got some photo’s around the grand staircase. This location must be one of the signature portrait spots for Sundridge Park Manor. As soon as you see it you know you need to get some photos here. I think we managed to do it justice.

We all had a fantastic day and everything went really well. It was a very relaxed day and Andrea and Nick were both very easy to work with. They were surrounded by their close friends and family and it was truly a special day.

Be Inspired

I went on a really good photography workshop day today run by GF Smith which was very much a day of doubles; 2 x presenters, 2 x shoots and 2 x models. The two presenters worked well together and offered contrasting styles of shooting. They were:

Kevin Wilson: A well known and decorated wedding photographer who favoured available light shooting modified with reflectors.

Mark Lawrence: Another accomplished photographer representing a different style of shooting using portable flash lighting

The two models were both excellent and really easy to work with. Its a shame they aren’t local models, it would be great to work with them again. Ella was in the wedding dress and Holly wore the feathers. They were the icing on the cake for me as I don’t generally work with professional models.

Here’s a selection of some of my favourite images converted to black and white as that seemed to be a preference of the day. I will put a fuller set of colour images on the Shooterz website in due course.

It was a great day and as ever, there’s always something new to learn.

Anna & Brads Wedding

OK – lets not get too carried away – I didn’t actually shoot this wedding. I only went along to get some firework photos for a friend really. Then it turns out that Mikasa Events are the DJ and another friend is helping setup the fireworks. A real little re-union. I couldn't help getting some shots of the first dance which looked pretty cool with the addition of the dry ice.

The fireworks were an excellent, truly professional display, organised by Angelfire Pyrotechnics. These guys really knew their craft!

The event was held at Turkey Mill in Maidstone. It was a really lovely setting with plenty of open space, water and everything was lit up beautifully at night. My favourite photos form the night were in fact the shots taken after the fireworks of the beautiful setting:

Maidstone Gang Show 2011

Maidstone Gang Show had their biennual run at the Hazlitt theatre in Maidstone the other week. Always a good week full of re-unions and new friends. Being part of the ‘gang behind the gang’ meant that I didn’t get many opportunities to shoot the cast and the show so I took the opportunities I had and focused on the technical stuff instead. I think Shock Solutions emptied their warehouse for this one. There was a high res LED video wall, low res video arch, about 20 moving lights. Everywhere you looked backstage there were flight cases with the Shock logo’s on them.

Honk! Timelapse

You’ve hopefully seen my recent blog entry about the fabulous Honk! production. I took the opportunity to do some timelapse photography during the setup and the dress rehearsal. I learnt a lot and would do some things differently next time but I think it was worth the effort.

I had the pleasure of spending a day in the company of the cast and crew from Chichester University the other day. They are currently performing a Southern UK tour of the production ‘Honk’. This is an adaptation of the Ugly Duckling story. This leg of the tour was held at the Kent Scouts Barn.

They were a really nice bunch of people and they were very welcoming to me. I took photos during the ‘get in’ and the dress rehearsal. Unfortunately, due to the layout of the venue, there wasn’t really space for me to shoot during the show itself. Most of their day was spent adapting moves to accommodate the unusual ‘split’ audience as they would be performing in the middle of the audience.

Then . . . to the show itself! It was a marvellous performance. There was some great acting and I found Honk both funny and moving. It took some nerve for the cast to perform so close to the audience, it was really up close and personal. The front rows could have reached out and touched the cast most of the time. I really loved the venue for getting the audience so close to the performance, it was a very different theatrical experience. I wonder if any people doubted the validity of the venue but I think it was a resounding success. So much of the show was simply but so effectively implemented, costumes, lighting, props all really worked well.

I LOVED IT ! I wish the cast and crew all the best for the rest of the tour and for whatever they all get up to next as for many of them, this is their last year of University before they set off into the world beyond.

Casablanca Steps

It’s always nice to see my photos being used somewhere. Last summer at the Kent Show I watched the Casablanca Steps doing their thing again. I love watching this foursome playing their tunes. They are hugely entertaining and I try and catch them every year. This year I had my camera and as well as catching photos of them performing, I also spent some time with the band on their ‘downtime’ and we hung around the classic cars for some photos. I cant explain how funny this bunch of guys are !! If you get an opportunity go and see them.

Cornwall Holiday Pt.2

Ok – So I recently posted photos of St Michaels Mount from my holiday in Cornwall. The other photo opportunity that came up on the holiday was to photograph surfers. Its something I’ve never done before and my 70-200 lens wasn’t really long enough to get as close as I would have liked. However, there are so many megapixels in my camera that I could afford to crop them down quite severely (just like digital zoom on your point and shoot camera). Here’s the pick of the bunch . . .

I could have stayed much longer and tried some more shots but it was supposed to be a ‘family’ holiday and not a ‘camera’ holiday. I could have got a lot closer if I had been brave enough to get my toes wet but the water looked PROPER COLD !!!

Cornish Holiday Pt.1

I recently had a holiday in Cornwall in a cottage which had fantastic views across the bay to St Michaels Mount. It was a most wonderful thing to be cooking up the bacon (not me of course - I took people with me to do the cooking) in the morning and looking out to the island. I took many photos of the island during the week but took the opportunity to play with some High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos which I think came out quite well . . . .What do you think?

London Home Automation Pt.1

I had a really interesting day seeing what you can do in your home when money is no object and you have a geeky nature. I went to photograph a home in London where my friends at Shock Solutions were installing all the home gadgets possible. This home was designed and decorated to a really high standard. Shock Solutions were providing the AV and home automation integration, lighting and heating control and delivering TV, music and video around the home from a central location and controlled via iPads.

Here’s a little movie of the LED lighting changing in the kitchen (which I did from my iPhone using the Rako app) If you know me, you’ll know how cool I thought this was !

Here’s one of the lighting options from the master ensuite bathroom, which includes changeable colours from IN the bathtub !! (Note the LED TV in the wall)

The stairs down to the cinema room also deployed more changeable LED lighting.

Did you notice the glimpse of the custom mural on the back wall of the cinema room. Here’s a better look below. Its a custom Chicago skyline (that’s where this couples other home is !). It was designed and painted by hand by the extremely talented Carren from Artistic Touch Artworks. I really like her work!

I will follow up this blog with another which is aimed more at the techy geeks with some of the facts on all the gadgets that have gone into this home.

Another Mikasa Roadtrip

Another invitation to go on a mammoth journey out of the region with that mad hatter DJ – Nev from Mikasa Events. I of course said yes! THEN . . . a five hour trip to the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham for what turned out to be a 45 minute DJ set and a lot of sitting around! What a weird and wonderful world it is to be a DJ.

We still had a good evening and played around with some other photo opportunities whilst we sat around.

It’s really worth mentioning the door staff at the East Midlands Conference Centre. They were a really good bunch of guys and we had quite a laugh with them (we did spend the best part of four hours hanging around with them). Most importantly they helped us find the local pizza delivery service. The strapping gent below was a fine example of the men ‘not to be messed with’ at the end of the night.

Tineye

I found this excellent tool referenced in one of the blogs that I read that led me to the Fairtrade Photographer Blog and there onto Tineye. Tineye is an image search engine with a bit of a twist. You feed it an image and it compares it against it’s web trawled and indexed image library of 1,785,349,311 images to date. It then tells you where that image has been found elsewhere on the internet.

This is a great tool for anyone dealing with images, photos etc on the internet if you want to see if your work is being used without your knowledge. Maybe you are considering purchasing stock images and want to see if they are in use elsewhere on the internet?

They have plugins for most popular browsers so that you can right click on an image and get the image checked.

Sarah’s Good Cause

Sarah came to me with a good cause. Her Nan has been in hospital and she wanted to give something back. Sarah is a singing coach and so she decided to record a CD to raise some money for the Stroke Unit at Maidstone Hospital. The problem . . she needed some photos for the CD cover.

The resulting CD is called ‘My Way of helping’. Keep an eye out on Sarah’s website to see if you can get hold of a copy. Sarah hadn’t had photos taken like this before but she soon settled into it and we got some nice shots.

Alys (not the camel)

I had a busy weekend of portraits recently and here’s some highlights from the shoot with Alys. Alys is a good friend of mine and knows how to play up to the camera. We always have a laugh when we get together with the camera. I think that shows in the pictures.

East Lancs Scouts–Pulse 2010

Saturday 23rd October saw my friend ‘DJ Nev’ and I take a small road trip from Maidstone all the way up to Blackburn. The purpose was for DJ Nev to play to a waiting crowd of Explorer Scouts at Bowley Scout Centre and for me to capture the event with photos.

As with many Scout events, it was held in a marquee but that doesn’t stop a proper job being done. A pro spec lighting and sound setup was to be found to provide a good club vibe.

The place was jumping and a small crowd gathered to show their appreciation at the end of the evening.

Hats off to the guy that spent the whole evening dressed in the skin tight suit.

And thanks to Matt for organising the whole thing.

Kent Weald Guides Centenary Celebration

Timeline: 20:10 on 20/10 year 2010 – Girl Guides all over the UK remade their promises to end their year of Centenary celebrations. I like what they did there!

I was invited along to Kent Weald’s celebrations held at the Kent Showground near Maidstone to photograph the evening for them. Over 2,000 Guides of all ages attended and they sure were noisy!

A few celebratory songs and video clips from the year led the proceedings and then they linked up with Guides from across the UK to retake their promises.

The evening was rounded off with some excellent fireworks.

Log Cabin and Fast Cars

A group of us went to take photos of a log cabin in the woods at the weekend and also got the opportunity to shoot some fast cars.

I’m no car geek but even I recognised these as nice cars!

Its the first time I’ve sat in an Aston Martin.
The sun was going down and we were running out of time so these were taken in a bit of a hurry but they came out OK I think.

Chief Scouts Visit to Kent

Today was a good day. Talk about organised chaos though! A friend of mine was asked to help take photo's of the Chief Scouts Visit to Kent. In turn he asked if I would like to come along as well. Here's some of my highlights before getting more photos up onto the website. Bear Grylls (Chief Scout if you didn’t know) flew in by helicopter and spent a hectic 45 minutes on the ground at the Kent Scouts Barn. He then jumped back aboard the helicopter and headed off to the Detling showground to be mobbed no doubt by further crowds of Scouts. I wonder if it was as hectic up there . . . . ?

He started with a climb up the wall and a quick address to the crowd gathered below.

A trip on the zip wire and then some official business unveiling the plaque and meeting some sponsors.

Then into the barn to complete as many of the challenges as he had time for . . .

A couple of presentations and he was on his way again

It turned out I wasn’t really even second shooter as there was a whole bunch of us; me, my friend, an Explorer Scout photographer, one sent from National HQ, another from Southern Water (a sponsor) and another guy in a grey hoodie that kept popping up. Unfortunately that means there aren’t (m)any photos where Bear was actually looking at me. It was still a good day though!

Barry and Carol’s Wedding

I haven’t put much up here for a while and have a small backlog of things that I will get around to writing entries for. In the meantime, here are some samples from the recent wedding I shot for friends of ours Barry and Carol at the Archbishops Palace in Maidstone. Neither of them were fussed about having their photo taken but I think we did OK. We got real lucky with the weather, it rained just as we called it a ‘wrap’ before leaving for the reception.

I was lucky enough to be invited to spend this years May Day with the Cinque Port Morris side (I may have invited myself . . . I forget). Little did I know that they start the day at 05:31 with the sun up. On this occasion the sun was sorely missing though!

Starting at Smallhythe, then onto Winchelsea church (via the Swan at Wittersham for a superb breakfast!), followed by dancing at Rye Harbour, Rye town and back to Smallythe to finish. Here are a couple more photos . . .

This is Cinque Port Morris dancing around Spike Milligan’s grave . .
A quiet moment was spent around The Mary Stanford Memorial: This beer keg travelled with us all day and was kindly supplied by the Rother Valley Brewery and was filled with their Weald Bitter. A very tasty brew which went down very nicely ! There are a sample of photo’s on the facebook page and a better collection on the website. The full set have been passed back to Cinque Port Morris so they can use some on their own website.

Xcel 2000 10th Anniversary Dinner

At the weekend I was lucky enough to take photos at the Xcel 2000 10th anniversary celebrations. There was a buffet dinner, some awards and then I understand there was dancing late into the night. (I left before it got too late!)
Something that I’d never seen before at an event was a cartoon artist doing live caricatures. He was brilliant! (I recommend that you check him out at www.giggleface.co.uk

All the people at the party were very charming and out to have a good time. The three lady directors have obviously worked very hard to make their 10th anniversary. I wish them all the best for the next 10 years.

It’s Snow Trouble!

I didn’t actually get out with my camera very much during the snow whilst it was daylight as I was working. The Land Rover got me to work without any trouble.

I did get out to try a some long exposure night shots of the local park though which turned out OK. These two photos were taken at 90 second exposures.

This next one was a photo that I had taken before with my previous camera and it had really showed up the dirt on my sensor. No such problems this time . . . .

New Years Day Morris Dancing

A friend of mine belongs to Cinque Port Morris so we went to see them dance at the Bell and Jorrocks in Frittenden on New Years Day.

They were joined by the colourful and ever energetic morris side: Loose women (I should point out this should be pronounced as ‘loo’s’ rather than as in ‘slack’)

The two sides took it in turn to dance before finishing with a worthwhile joint effort.

What the pictures don’t show is that it was bloomin’ freezing out there !
